What is LMaSS?

The Laboratory for Materials and Surface Science (LMaSS) is a University center for education and research into the structure and properties of a wide variety of materials. We emphasize surfaces and thin films and processes which occur at those interfaces. An increasing proportion of work concerns biomaterials.

LMaSS consists of an interdisciplinary faculty drawn from four academic departments. We promote the cross-fertilization of ideas and a collaborative approach to solving research problems.

LMaSS includes an assembly of state-of-the-art materials characterization instruments and techniques (capital cost ~ $2 million). Each instrument is associated with one or more faculty or staff members who provide expert advice to other users.

LMaSS emphasizes the education of graduate and undergraduate students in the use of all its facilities.

LMaSS provides cooperative service to students, faculty and staff from any of UAH's research center and academic departments, and to researchers in Government and industrial enterprises.

We are also involved in a range of other developments, including courseware on surface spectroscopies and software for analysis of spectroscopic data.
