Scanning Probe Microscopy Lab

The scanning probe microscopy lab at UAH provides a wide array of SPM techniques for research. The facility houses several instruments for SPM studies including a Digital Instruments D3000, a Digital Instruments Multimode SPM and a Digital Instruments Nanoscope-E.  In addition to the DI microscopes, the lab has a Molecular Imaging Pico SPM.  This instrument has been optimized for controlled environment studies such as gas ambient, varied temperature, electrochemical and liquid ambient studies.

Scanning Probe Microscopy involves the direct observation of surfaces employing a proximal probe, such as a conducting metal tip as with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), or a tip attached to a microcantilever as with the atomic force microscope (AFM).  With these techniques, it is possible to obtain near atomic scale pictures of surfaces.

The evolution of SPM as a way of gathering information about surfaces has evolved to include many new SPM techniques. All of these techniques are available in the LMaSS SPM facility.
